What is the 80/20 rule for SEO?

Most of your results come from a small part of the work. Here is where that part usually is, and how to find yours.

The 80/20 rule says most of your results come from a small part of the work. In SEO, a handful of pages and searches bring most of the clicks and leads, so you find those and put your effort there before anything else.

Where the 20% usually is

This is from doing the work, not from a study. On most small business sites the effort that pays is in the same few places:

  • Pages that already rank between position 4 and 20. Google already thinks the page is relevant. Moving it up is far easier than starting a new one.
  • The title and the first paragraph. They decide whether a person clicks and whether they stay.
  • Your Google Business Profile. For a local business the map is often where the call comes from.
  • Whatever stops a page being indexed. A page Google will not index cannot rank, however good it is.
  • One page per service, and one per area you really serve. A single page that lists everything ranks for nothing in particular.

How to find yours

  1. Open Google Search Console and go to Performance.
  2. Set the date range to the last three months and turn on average position.
  3. Sort the searches by impressions.
  4. Look for searches a buyer would type where your position is between 4 and 20.
  5. Open the Pages tab for each one to see which page is ranking.

That short list is your 20%. Rewrite the title so it says what the page offers and where. Put the direct answer at the top. Add the detail a buyer needs: price, area, how long it takes, what happens next. Link to the page from your other pages.

What you can leave for later

  • Chasing every variation of a keyword
  • Checking rankings every day
  • Publishing posts to hit a number
  • Polishing tags on pages nobody visits

A caution about the numbers

The split is rarely exactly 80 and 20. On one site it is five pages, on another it is fifty. The rule is a way of looking, not a law. Use it to decide what to do on Monday, then check in Search Console a month later whether you were right.
