ChatGPT can help with parts of SEO: outlines, first drafts, title ideas, structured data and formulas. It cannot see your Search Console, crawl your site or know what your customers ask unless you give it that. It is a fast assistant, not the person accountable for the result.
What it is good at
- Turning a list of customer questions into a page outline
- Suggesting ten titles so you can pick one
- Writing structured data from details you supply
- Writing the filters and formulas for a Search Console export
- Rewriting a paragraph that is too long
- Explaining an error message from a crawler
What it gets wrong
- It invents facts. Ask for a statistic and you will get one, with a source that may not exist. Never publish a number it gave you without finding where it came from.
- It writes the average of the internet. If your page reads like every other page on the subject, there is no reason to rank yours.
- It does not know your business. Your prices, your service area, the job you did last week: none of that is in it.
- It cannot check anything. It will not notice that the page it helped write is blocked from Google.
How I use it
I give it real inputs and I keep the judgment. I paste in the export from Search Console, or the page itself, and ask for options. Then I check every claim against the source before it goes anywhere near a live site. The prices, the figures and the examples on this site come from my own records, not from a model.
Can ChatGPT rank my website?
No tool ranks a website. What ranks is a page that answers a real question, on a site search engines can read, for a business that exists. A model can make the writing and the checking faster. It cannot supply the answer your customer is looking for, because that answer is in your head and in your work.
Being found inside ChatGPT is a separate question
People also ask AI systems to recommend a business. To be one of the names that comes back, the site has to be readable by AI crawlers and say plainly what you do and where. That is ordinary SEO with a few additions, and I covered it in the post on whether SEO is still worth it.
